Pouring in hot water this morning to heat up my mug before the coffee went in and this crack decided to spread all the way through and now leaks. It is my absolute favorite coffee mug, so I might try and do that Chinese method of filling in cracks with gold (or some other filler) as it shows the history and such of the piece.
Other coffee news, I recently got a French press and some really nice coffee from Volcanic. I got a Kenya Peaberry and a Tanzania AA coffee beans. I am still experimenting with the right amount of coffee to water in the french press and steep times, but I have to say the Peaberry is delicious and different from other coffees I have had. I can really understand coffee snobbery now. This is far better than the ultra dark cheapo stuff we put through the drip machine.
Coffee added to the list of things I will now try to spend more money on for a better product as with whiskey, wine, and hifi.

Coffee really is better in a French Press than most cheap drip makers, but only if you buy good coffee. Garbage in, garbage out is still the rule. I’ll tell you that if you don’t mind spending for a really good cup though, Nespresso is the best of all. But you do pay.

I used to buy the Peaberry from trader joes, I really liked the flavor, maybe not the most caffeine but very drinkable. I also enjoy the french press, I use a courser grind and generally one scoper of ground coffee per 8 oz of water for proper coffee amounts.

I’m a huge fan of the Aeropress since I live alone and a whole French Press carafe would make me vibrate.

Assuming your buying whole bean?
My wife found https://www.koffeekult.com/ which is the cheapest “good” coffee we have come across. Worth a shot if you’re experimenting .
I love a cup from a press if the operator knows what they are doing...I was never able to make it work for my taste.
We use a pour over with two filters, one metal and one cloth. Also a burr grinder for the beans.

Surprised to hear all this love for the French press. I switched to a Moka pot 15-16 years ago and never looked back.

Aeropress is amazing

Awe man. That’s a cool mug. You should definitely try and save it.

Those are just fancy percolators right? Percolators are known to make some of the worst coffee know to man.

Mine is just a 2 cup press. Prefect for just me

Yeah whole bean is the only way to go. I have an electric grinder, but I do not like it and thinking of getting a better one. I think that will help out too.

Awesome thank you for the input.

Yeah I love the shape and the hand drawn pupper.

I will try to remember to give them a try when I buy more coffee next.

Burr grinders are a pain because they have to be cleaned and we haven’t had one last more than two years, but they are way better particularly when you need a specific grind sizes for FP or pour over.

Just different ways of making the same stuff. The press does have one drawback for me, which is increased sediment in the brew. I also don’t like the clean up, and that’s why I stopped using it after college.

I use a french press but I have yet to reach the snobbery of timing and measuring everything. It’s usually a “that looks good enough” amount of grounds and a “Now seems like a good time to drink it
” amount of steeping. I think it tastes fine but I’m probably missing out on something
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:18 |

Not necessarily. We still pull out my parents’ ancient percolator for parties. Makes a pretty good cup, if you ask me. Depends on what you put in it.

I am thinking of just buying a vintage Peugeot grinder and cleaning it up and using it, cause why not?
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:19 |

Hmmm odd. It just isn’t going to be the best out of the coffee you put in it because it is constant ly cooking and recooking the coffee water ultimately burning the coffee.
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:20 |

Yeah I time mine and everything. Seems to be more my inconsistent amount of beans I put in the grinder that is changing the outcome.

Haha that would be awesome minus hand cranking your coffee. I have this one which has been the best yet. It jams every once in a while, but it can be cleared without opening it up.

I feel you on paying extra for many things lately....specifically those three.
And a ll of these new vinyl releases are really adding up!
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:24 |

I do just enough to cover the blades of my grinder
and shoot for around 5 minutes of steep. I have left it to steep for much longer while getting caught up in something else and never noticed much of a difference there. One of these days I’ll start experimenting with it all
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:25 |

I also meant to add that if you can’t fix it, use it as a pen holder on your desk. I’ve got a similar sentimental mug that I look at all the time on my desk.
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:29 |

Not bad and far better than the one we have now.
I wouldn’t mind hand cranking to be totally honest.
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:30 |

I already have an original GM Fiero mug as my pen holder.
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:31 |

Yeah I haven’t felt the need to buy more vinyl lately , thankfully, as I have a ton
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:32 |

Yes and no. It works on the same principle as a percolator, it’s just better constructed ( with the metal portafilter) IMHO.
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:32 |
|
Exactly why I stopped using it, the clean up.
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:34 |

The moka pot is a little different because it pushes the steam through the coffee and the brewed coffee goes into a catch pot where it doesn’t re-brew.
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:41 |
|
Ah ok that should actually make decent coffee then.
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:43 |
|
Did it break because it went on fire?
![]() 09/29/2020 at 12:45 |
|
Lol, no it isn’t even broken. I inherited it from a coworker since I had a Fiero and he used it as a pen holder, so I do too.

I’ve resisted many, but it sucks when you have the original LP and they come out with the 11-disc box set. 10? No....not 10.....ELEVEN!!!

What box set? Anything is better to 11

I love the mug, definitely try to save it in a non toxic way.
I’ve been spending more on high quality versions of those items as well. Mostly. I still just get the same basic cold brew I always buy. I made a decision on Friday about wine. I kind of do not mind drinking my nice bottles, even if it’s just a random day and I’m by myself. The Bordeaux I had on Friday, I didn’t finish and it was one of the better bottles I own. Who cares? I throughly enjoyed the experience. I open wine once a week at most. I need to weed out some of my “Tuesday bottles” and just get nice bottles I love. Not decent bottles that are ok. Then, I need to not feel bad when drinking them. I will still probably break even since my dining out spending is way down. I have been working on my wardrobe recently. That has been a little spendy but all high quality things that should last a few years when I feel like buying clothes again lol
![]() 09/29/2020 at 13:07 |
|
Yeah I never feel bad about opening a bottle of wine, but then I have yet to buy a really expensive bottle. I am always trying things that I haven’t heard of or maybe I wouldn’t normally buy, but it has a neat label or a fascinating story on the back along with a good tasting note. Sometimes they are good, sometimes they aren’t but then I know you know?
My wardrobe needs a massive overhaul in my nicer clothes division. I have decent jeans and nice t shirts, but the nice clothes have been lacking hard as I haven’t really needed more than a nice pair of black slacks and a black shirt for catering etc. I think I will probably wait till doing things out gets more common again till I buy nice clothes since I do not really have anywhere to wear them to atm.
The mug is definitely getting saved, that is for sure.

I mean, that’s not my experience, but then I like Italian roast, which lots of people think is “burnt” tasting.

Oh nice! I didn’t know that was a thing.

U2, All That You Can’t Leave Behind 20th anniversary.
20 years? Yikes
$220? I definitely can leave that behind, I’ll enjoy the $30 two- disc set, and check Ebay next spring for deals on the full set.

If you want coffee snob level coffee but also convenience, look into pour-over style drip machines. We have the cheap(est because none of them are that cheap) Bonavita pour-over machine and with pretty much any decent whole beans freshly ground in our cheap Krups burr grinder, it makes an excellent cuppa.
![]() 09/29/2020 at 15:16 |
|
I mean, are you even grinding the beans yourself though?

Sucks about your mug! :(
I am one of those weird people that doesn’t like coffee OR tea.....tea, no matter what flavour I’ve tried and what I put in it...just
tastes like hot water to me, haha. It SMELLS delicious though....
Same with coffee, no matter what I put in it, I just can’t get over the taste. I guess it’s the aftertaste, really....it’s just so bitter and...bleh.
Hot chocolate is my favorite hot drink...probably not very healthy, but I don’t have a million cups a day of it, so I think I’m ok. It’s quite tasty with an espresso shot as well, so you get a little coffee flavour and caffeine
, but without the icky aftertaste. :)

Yup. They make them in all sorts of sizes

I mean the French press is super easy and convenient . Especially since it just makes the 2 cups worth I drink.

Well yeah. What would be the point if I didn’t?
